Biography: ANTÓNIO RODRIGUES was born in the Vale de Açor district of Portalegre in 1965. The arts have always been a passion since childhood. However, it was already as an adult that he wanted to deepen his knowledge, namely in sculpture; painting, drawing and ceramics. In 1995 he attended a course in traditional Portuguese tile painting at CENCAL in Caldas da Rainha, which made him awaken to the different techniques used in ceramics. In 2019, in Montemor-o-Novo, at Oficinas do Convento, he attended training on the theme “Custom-made tableware” using a potter’s wheel, molds and ballast. At the end of that year he returns to Montemor for another training, but now in Raku. In 2022 he attends a Workshop in Tomar, on smoke techniques with some great names in ceramics; João Pinto Costa; Jose Conceição; Fernando Sarmento; Diogo Rosa and Stefania Barale.

Synopsis: Ceramic is the oldest artificial material produced by man, having existed for about ten to fifteen thousand years. From the Greek "keramos", "scorched earth" or "burnt clay". Over the centuries, many techniques have been used, both in manufacturing processes and in decoration. Techniques like Raku, Sagar among others. The present exhibition on the topic of ceramic fumes, consists of a process of decoration through reduction, using combustible materials such as sawdust, dry leaves, coffee, banana peels, etc. Fire to burn needs oxygen and releases free carbon atoms (reducing atmosphere). This carbon, when encountering oxygen in the clay, transforms these atoms resulting in the colors that we can find in the pieces.
